“Coming in from IIT, Virtusa was an amazing experience. I was here during my industrial training year and I was offered a job directly as a Software Engineer as soon as I graduated and then changed my path to Business Consulting. Already having a year of experience up my sleeve, I was able to fit right in and feel at home once I rejoined,” Nimashi speaking of her experience following life after graduation said.

“From the nursery onwards till A/L’s, I schooled at Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya. As a child I wanted to become a lawyer or software engineer. This was identified by my mom who encouraged me to start my IT education. I started my higher education by following a Foundation Certificate in Higher Education at IIT which was followed by the BEng (Hons) Software Engineering Degree. This is one of the main milestones in my life as my ambition was to become a Software Engineer,” she said.

“I greatly enjoyed my time at IIT from the academic life to all the extra-curricular activities. The academic staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, providing valuable insights into the course content and they were always ready to guide us in the right direction with our studies. I was also a team member of the netball team which has had many successful tournaments. Athletics is something I enjoyed participating in and was able to take part in the annual meets. I’m also enthusiastic about music and dancing and therefore I was a member of the Kandyan dancing team and during the final year I performed a Bollywood dance where the team became runner-up at the Stage Craft, the annual talent show of IIT. I was also an active member of the IIT choir,” she said.

“IIT provides the best standards in university education in the field of IT. Keeping close ties with the research community and the IT industry, IIT provides the best path for students to follow their aspirations based on their preferences. I found it very easy to transition in to my employment at Virtusa as the knowledge provided during my degree helped a great deal. The industrial placement programme which is amandatory part of the degree programmewas a great boon in entering into professional work during the degree itself,” she said.

“My main goal is to start my MBA soon and complete it so that it will be another pillar of success for me in my career. I would really work hard and gain enough experience to start up my own software company so that I will be able to utilize my leadership skills more on doing what I love and adore,” Nimashi said.

One year after graduation at IIT Campus: Anushiya speaks of how Life has turned out to be…

During the 25 years of excellence, the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT Campus) has produced over 3,000 graduates that have empowered nearly 250 multinational and local blue-chip companies.

Since its inception as a pioneer higher education institute in Sri Lanka that offers internal British degrees in the disciplines of Information Technology and Business, many IIT graduates have annexed themselves in eminent positions by being innovators, entrepreneurs and business leaders.

We caught up with AnushiyaBastiampillai, who is a past pupil of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya. Graduated at IIT Campus affiliated to the University of Westminster, with a degree in Information Systems with Business Management. Anushiya is currently employed at WS02 as an Account Manager. Here’s an abstract of the interview,Anushiya

It has been a year since you graduated. What has been your experience as a graduate working in WSO2 like during the past one year?

The experience I gained during my internship at Virtusa helped me with things like professional conduct, business etiquette, etc.  Since I started at WSO2, I’ve been working with the sales team as an Account Manager. I also organised and took part in many activities such as the basketball tournament, cricket tournament, motor rally and Christmas carols.

I also got the opportunity to go to the US to meet with customers and attend conferences alongside other global tech giants.

What made you join IIT?

During my A/L’s I was looking for programmes that incorporated both IT and Business, and most importantly a program and institution that complemented my skills and abilities. Therefore, I decided to join the BSc. Information Systems with Business Management program. Another factor I took into consideration was the yearlong internship and the reputation IIT graduates had in the industry.

What was your campus experience like at IIT?

It was full of adventure and filled with fond memories. The course content was up to date and the variety of subjects gave me exposure to all the management and information systems career fields. This gave me the opportunity to identify my strengths and likings so I could mold my career around them.

I actively took part in most activities and won awards as well. These helped hone my skills and discover some new talents. Teamwork, leadership, people skills and communication played important roles in all activities these activities, making sure we took the learning out of the classroom and applied them.

Notable memories, achievements or experiences you at IIT?

Stage craft – I was entertainment director and organized the Stage Craft in 2012, Also sang, acted, compered and trained the choir.

Netball – played for informatics group at the mercantile tournaments. Captained the Gamini house team and won for 3 consecutive years.

Spearheaded Cutting Edge 2014, which was a great success.

Introduced the IIT Toastmasters CLub

Won an award of merit at the HSBC Youth Enterprise Awards for my business idea.

How did the industrial placement year offered during the 3rd year of the IIT degreeProgramme help you to join WSO2 which is one of Sri Lanka’s top IT companies?

I interned as a QA Engineer at Virtusa, specifically in the Enterprise Applications Group. QA was offered as a module in the fourth year. So, the real life experience gained during the internship, helped me a great deal in my final year module.

Also got the chance to volunteer at Google for Entrepreneurs Week Sri Lanka and organized the event.Joined the Virtusa Toastmasters Club – loved it!!! And then brought it to IIT.

Talking about the learning experience at IIT. What is your opinion about the academic quality of IIT?

Learning was not limited to lectures. Interactive tutorials, discussions, field trips, personal guidance and mentoring – all of these led to a well-rounded education, which is believe is very important!

Lecture materials and assessments come directly from the University in the UK, and the lecturers in SL keep close contact with their counterparts in the UK. In addition, the fact that final year coursework and exams are regulated directly by the university gives the assurance and credibility of the certification I received.

Why would you recommend IIT to anyone else?

IIT not only focuses on what students like and what is trendy. It focuses on employability, career readiness, and fit for the industry. Academic standards are maintained at a high level.

What is your plan for the future. Any goals that you want to accomplish?

My final year project focused on Entrepreneurship in Sri Lanka, particularly on encouraging mothers to start up. My ambition is to be an Entrepreneur, preferably a social entrepreneur and create positive impact in society.

While at WSO2, I started a little hobby-business, “Brownie Lovin’ “, because I love baking and brownies are my favorite! It’s been going well so far and given me a taste of what being an entrepreneur is like. Also, I won’t stop my singing and other extra activities.

One year after graduation at IIT Campus: Gayan moving up the corporate ladder

Seeking employment immediately after graduation is a challenge for many students that pursue the most lucrative and ideal career opportunities. While a very few manage to secure a place in their dream job, many languish in the grim state of unemployment, waiting for a response from an established corporate entity to recruit them.

During the 25 years of educational excellence, the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT Campus) has been renowned for having a 100% employability rate of its graduates. One of the key factors that contribute for IIT Campus graduates to be in demand is mainly due to the 12 month internship which is embedded to the 4 year sandwich internal degree offered by the University of Westminster. IIT Campus has also been renowned for producing well-rounded graduates that have the right kind of positive attitude and competencies that are in demand in today’s fast paced digital world.

Gayan Welihinda (24) graduated from IIT Campus last year and is enjoying success as he is an account manager for Dialog. Speaking of his journey, Gayan said that he has climbed the corporate ladder and succeeded in his endeavors thanks to the grooming he received at IIT Campus.

“It has been quite an experience. You realize how tough the real corporate world is and start really appreciating what prepared you for it. It is a lot of fun though and I’m glad I have the opportunity of working as an Account Manager for the No. 1 Telco in Sri Lanka. Hopefully there’ll be many more years to go,” Gayan said.

“My parents were the reason I joined. But in less than a month of attending lectures I realized that IIT was a well-recognized University not just among students, but also in the industry. My dad got the idea after noticing the quality of a few IIT graduates in his organization. Also, since most of his colleagues recommended IIT, he made the wise decision of convincing me to go there. But as of yet, the main reason I favor IIT over other universities is due to it being the only Uni with a one year industrial placement opportunity. I also liked the whole Business and IT combination of the degree which was unique compared to the degrees the other universities provided,” he said.

Gayan said that his industrial placement helped him immensely to have an edge over other new graduates when commencing his professional journey. “I completed my Internship at Unilever Sri Lanka as an IT Trainee. I was able to handle many projects independently and get an overall corporate exposure. The internship trained me to face the real corporate world and the pressure and stress which comes along with it. It improved my confidence, presentation, street skills and groomed me for a real job,” he said.

Gayan who is also known as an up and coming young artist has been involved in many extracurricular activities during his time at IIT Campus.

“I was able to use my talents in areas of dancing, singing, beat-boxing, acting, sports and also in radio presenting. I won a couple of awards at Stage craft as the best dance act for 4 consecutive years. And during my final year I was able to win the award for the overall best performer of stagecraft. From there on I was asked to perform at exclusive events,” he said.

“I think the degree offered at IIT is one of a kind.  Most of the high-end employees in top corporateGayan are IIT graduates. The subject matter and content is vast and extremely useful and gives you a wide area of knowledge. The degree is highly recognized all over the world and in Sri Lanka. It is a good place to grow into a professional individual. The lectures are very informative and the lecturers are very hard working and are skilled supervisors. IIT also has a wide variety of activities which help develop personal and academic skills. I would specially recommend IIT to anyone who wants to shine as an individual,” he said.

However, I did not feel it as such.  This is mainly due to the fact that I already had a full year of corporate experience in Software Engineering during my internship period which is mandatory during our period of studies at IIT. So I am pretty much familiar to these kinds of workload,” he said.
