Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), in partnership with Robert Gordon University (RGU), has introduced enhanced Artificial Intelligence degree pathways designed to meet the growing demand for AI, data engineering, intelligent systems, and future-ready technology professionals in Sri Lanka and beyond.
As IIT and Robert Gordon University celebrate ten years of successful academic collaboration, both institutions continue to strengthen their shared commitment to internationally recognised UK higher education, academic excellence, innovation, and industry-aligned learning.
This milestone was marked at a high-profile industry and academic forum held on
2 June 2026 at Hatch Works, Colombo 01. The event brought together academics, industry leaders, alumni, students, and members of the IIT and RGU community for a forward-looking discussion on the future of Artificial Intelligence education.
Reflecting the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence, intelligent systems, automation, and data-driven technologies, IIT and RGU announced major enhancements to their AI-focused academic portfolio.
The former BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Science programme has been repositioned as the
BEng (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering. This updated degree places stronger emphasis on engineering intelligent systems, building scalable data infrastructures, and developing AI-powered technologies that support modern industries.
At postgraduate level, the MSc Big Data Analytics programme has evolved into the
MSc AI Engineering, reflecting the increasing need for professionals who can design, build, deploy, and manage AI-driven systems within organisations.
Focused on AI systems, data infrastructure, engineering principles, and intelligent technology development.
Designed for graduates and professionals aiming to build, deploy, and scale AI-powered solutions.
The enhanced AI pathways were formally introduced during a high-level panel discussion moderated by
Dr. Ruvan Weerasinghe, Dean – Research at IIT. The discussion explored the future of AI, the skills required by next-generation professionals, and the importance of aligning higher education with industry transformation.
The distinguished panel featured Professor Nirmalie Wiratunga, Professor in Intelligent Systems and Associate Dean for Research at Robert Gordon University; Ms. Shehani Seneviratne, Chief Operating Officer of 99X Technology and Chairperson of SLASSCOM; Mr. Rohith Pradeep, Senior Vice President of Veracity Services; and Mr. Nipuna Senanayake, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for MSc AI Engineering at IIT.
The panel highlighted the importance of applied learning, responsible AI adoption, industry-relevant curricula, and the development of graduates who can translate AI theory into practical, scalable, and ethical technology solutions.
Artificial Intelligence is transforming businesses, public services, finance, healthcare, logistics, education, and software engineering. As industries increasingly adopt intelligent systems, the demand for graduates with strong AI engineering, data engineering, machine learning, and software development capabilities continues to grow.
Through these enhanced programmes, IIT and RGU aim to prepare students and professionals with the technical, analytical, and practical skills needed to succeed in an AI-powered economy.
Over the past decade, the IIT–RGU partnership has empowered thousands of students through globally respected UK qualifications, industry-relevant curricula, academic quality, and a strong focus on graduate employability.
The launch of the enhanced AI pathways marks the next chapter in this partnership, reinforcing the shared vision of IIT and Robert Gordon University to remain at the forefront of technology education in Sri Lanka.
Students and professionals interested in Artificial Intelligence, Data Engineering, Machine Learning, Intelligent Systems, and AI-powered technology careers can explore the new enhanced IIT–RGU degree pathways from the September 2026 intake.
IIT and Robert Gordon University have introduced the BEng (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering and MSc AI Engineering programmes from the September 2026 intake.
The enhanced AI degree pathways will be offered from the September 2026 intake at Informatics Institute of Technology.
AI Data Engineering focuses more on building intelligent systems, scalable data infrastructure, AI-powered applications, and engineering solutions for real-world industry needs.
