IIT CuttingEdge’26 Showcases Student Innovation at BMICH

Held on 30 June 2026 at BMICH, Colombo, IIT Cutting Edge 2026 brought together students, academics, industry professionals, investors and school communities for IIT’s annual exhibition of innovation, technology and enterprise.

Organised under the theme “Beyond Every Known Boundary,” the exhibition showcased student-led products, research projects and practical solutions developed to address real-world challenges across computing, engineering, business, commerce and related disciplines. The event demonstrated how ideas developed through academic study can progress beyond classroom assessment and evolve into solutions with technological, commercial and social value.

Cutting Edge provides IIT students with an opportunity to present their work within a professional exhibition environment and engage directly with individuals who can contribute to the next stage of their development. Through discussions with investors, entrepreneurs, industry representatives and decision-makers, students were able to receive technical feedback, gain commercial insight, explore partnerships and identify possibilities for further development, commercialisation and investment.

The exhibition also reflected the measurable value of connecting academic innovation with industry. A number of student projects showcased through Cutting Edge have attracted investor attention and progressed towards continued development, demonstrating that student work can extend beyond an exhibition display and become the foundation for investable products, start-ups and industry-ready solutions.

The event featured projects representing a wide range of interests and specialisations, allowing visitors to experience how technology, engineering and business knowledge can be combined to solve practical problems. By presenting their work to external audiences, students also strengthened their communication, entrepreneurial thinking, problem-solving and professional presentation skills.

Cutting Edge 2026 welcomed school students from Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka, providing them with exposure to emerging technologies, new products and different academic and career pathways. The exhibition offered young visitors an opportunity to interact with university students, explore multidisciplinary projects and gain a clearer understanding of the possibilities available within computing, engineering, commerce and business management.

Prof. Veranja Karunaratne, Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission, highlighted the importance of platforms that enable student ideas to move beyond academic environments and towards real-world application. Dr. Thilak Hapugahage, Associate Dean – Research at IIT, also reflected on the institution’s contribution to education, training and innovation, and the role of Cutting Edge in preparing students to respond to future industry and societal needs.

Through Cutting Edge, IIT continues to strengthen the connection between education, research, entrepreneurship and industry. The exhibition creates a structured pathway through which students can test their ideas, engage with relevant stakeholders and recognise the wider potential of the knowledge and skills they develop throughout their academic journey.

With more than 150 investable projects presented under one platform, IIT Cutting Edge 2026 reinforced a clear message: student innovation should not remain within the classroom. With the right exposure, guidance and industry connections, an academic project can develop into a viable product, an investable venture or a solution capable of creating meaningful real-world impact.
